The Newfoundland dog originated in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada as a working dog to help the fishermen. They are known for their large size, loyalty, friendliness, and strength. Bred for the water, they are commonly used as water rescue dogs. Their great strength is essential to help pull distressed people to shore and this is so innately bred into them, if you try to swim with your newf, don't be surprised if they try to grab you and pull you through the water! They are also known as "gentle giants" or the "nanny dog" and are wonderful with children.
Although our newfs are tight lipped and do not drool much, anticipate lots of slobbery kisses. And don't forget the dog glitter they'll leave around your house in the form of hair. They require some maintenance in the grooming department due to their long hair. They also have no idea how large they are and think they can sit in your lap. But you will never be short on love from these sweet dogs!
